Roopkund is situated in Chamoli district. It is a lake in Himalayas that remains frozen most of the year. It is also known as ‘the mystery lake’ or ‘the skeleton lake’ after a forest officer found several hundred skeletons scattered around the lake. Located in Uttarakhand state, Roopkund is located 5000meters above sea level. Kathgodam is the nearest main station. It has good connectivity to Lucknow, Dehradun, Delhi, Haridwar and Howarh. It is advised to book tickets in a month’s advance as the route is quite busy. Buses are also available to Kathgodam.
It is situated at the base of two Himalayan peaks: Trisul (7120 meters) and Nanda Ghunti (6310 meters). A religious festival is celebrated by the locals every autumn at the alpine meadow of Bedni bugyal. A larger celebration called ‘The Nanda Devi Raj Jaat’ is organized once every twelve years at Roopkund during which Nanda Devi is worshipped. It is a three week long pilgrimage where devotees from all over India arrive to worship Nanda Devi.
Roopkund trek varies from moderate to difficult. It requires physical fitness. This trek is for those who are ready to put in efforts and face challenges for the majestic view of the Himalayas.
